The Department of Computer Science is part of the Cornell Ann S. Bowers College of Computing and Information Science (Cornell Bowers CIS). It offers CS majors in the Colleges of Arts & Sciences and Engineering, and its graduate and professional studies include a Master of Engineering, a Master of Science, and a PhD program. The department is considered one of the top five CS departments in the U.S., with world-class research covering all of computer science.

The Department was organized in 1965 and is one of the oldest departments of its kind in the country. It has a full-time faculty of 59, approximately 225 resident Ph.D. graduate students, 120 M.Eng. students, and the undergraduate program graduates about 525 CS majors each year.
