Program Description

The Division of Nutritional Sciences (DNS) offers a minor in Global Health.  This program is intended to complement any academic major at the University. It will provide students with basic knowledge about global health, as well as the necessary skills and experience integrate this subject into their career.  For more information, visit the program website.

Experiential Learning Opportunity Requirement

As part of the Global Health Minor curriculum, students are required to successfully complete an Experiential Learning Opportunity (ELO).

The experiential learning component will provide students with the unique opportunity to connect theory and practice, to learn in unfamiliar contexts, to interact with others unlike themselves, and to practice using knowledge and skills in an applied public health setting. Through this requirement, students will be challenged to engage more effectively with the content of their courses while also learning about professional practice and about themselves as individuals. In addition, students will gain a deeper understanding of public health issues and problems and have the opportunity to enhance research, writing and critical thinking skills by applying knowledge and skills learned in the classroom to a public health field or laboratory setting.

The experience, whether field or laboratory, must relate to global or public health and it must meet the ELO criteria outlined below. The experience is intended to provide an opportunity to apply and integrate academic knowledge, conceptual tools and skills from coursework to real world public health issues.

ELO Criteria:

#1 Be hosted by an organization, institution, or research lab with a global/public health-focused mission that is addressing challenges or issues in the field.

#2 Be engaged in a supportive work environment that has a qualified global/public health professional who can provide guidance and oversight.

#3 Be provided opportunities that allow for the application of classroom learning in order to gain a deeper understanding of the complexities of global/public health issues.

#4 Have a clearly articulated scope of substantive work (position description) agreed upon by both the student, their on-site supervisor, and the Division of Nutritional Sciences.

#5 (Not mandatory, but encouraged) Allow the opportunity for direct engagement with community members in a meaningful, mutually-beneficial manner.

Before completing an ELO, students must:

• Successfully complete NS 2600 Introduction to Global Health
• Submit an ELO Petition Form for review by the DNS Petition Review Team.

After completing an ELO, students must:

• Successfully complete NS 4600 Explorations in Global and Public Health.

Elective Course Requirement

Students must complete a total of 9 credits of elective courses. All elective courses used to fulfill the minor requirements must be taken for a letter grade at Cornell. These three courses must be distributed across three out of the five following Elective Course categories:

Category I. Biomedical & Epidemiological Approaches to Global Health

Includes courses encompassing a ‘hard science” approach to the study of disease and epidemiology. Surveys both communicable and parasitic vectors commonly occurring in resource-poor as well as nutritional and environmental foundations of increasingly prevalent non-communicable disease.

Category III. Political, Economic & Food Systems Approaches to Global Health

Addresses local and global economic and political forces which influence the healthcare system of a region and its development. Educates students on subjects ranging from studies of agriculture and food system regulations to formulating balanced policy recommendations. This category focuses mainly on nutritional public policy from its basis in agro-economic theory to specific application to developing political systems.

Category V. Area-Specific Studies (Petition-Only)

Students may petition to fulfill an elective requirement with a course that examines specific regions or populations relating to the location of their field experience or their career interests. The Global Health Program also intends to create a culture that will encourage students to design and conduct independent studies that will supplement their academic and field experiences as a global health minor.

To petition for a course to count toward Category V, please submit an Elective Petition Form, found on the program website. Petitions are subject to review and approval is at the discretion of the Petition Review Committee.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the Global Health Minor, students are able to:

• Analyze global health problems, issues and controversies using multiple disciplinary perspectives and conceptual frameworks,
• Integrate knowledge from academic study and experiential learning toward being active and informed citizens in a global community,
  
• Demonstrate the capacity to critically reflect on one's own values, ethics, assumptions and actions in the context of cultures, collaborations and institutions,
  
• Demonstrate the capacity to collaborate across differences (e.g. cultural, social, personal, economic, values, religious).
