In addition to the major requirements outlined below, all students must meet the college graduation requirements:

Core Requirements


Special notes:


  • AEM 3200  and AEM 3230  are optional for students concentrating in Applied Economics, Environmental, Energy and Resource Economics, or International Trade and Development.

3. Applied Economics - must complete at least six credits from two different categories


Concentration Requirements


Students in the Charles H. Dyson School of Applied Economics and Management are required to complete a minimum of one concentration in order to meet degree requirements.

  • If desired, a student may choose to complete an additional concentration, but may not exceed two concentrations towards degree requirements.

  • Courses used to fulfill core requirements can not also be used to fulfill concentration requirements, except in Environmental, Energy and Resource Economics.

  • Students may apply one concentration elective course to fulfill the requirements of two concentrations.

  • All concentration requirements must be taken for a letter grade unless the course is offered S/U only.

Minimum of 3 credits of EERE-related electives at the 2000 level or higher offered by any of the following departments.


Students should work with their advisor in the Dyson Office of Student Services to identify courses that will fulfill the requirement.

Undergraduate Minors



Master of Professional Studies (M.P.S.)


The M.P.S. in Applied Economics and Management, administered by the Graduate School , requires 30 credits for degree completion inclusive of the problem-solving project:

  • At least 30 credits in courses numbered 5000 or higher
  • At least 24 credits must be taken in the S.C. Johnson College of Business
  • A maximum of 6 credits may be earned prior to admission and transferred in; these credits must be related to the subject of study and completed not more than 5 years before admission.
  • A minimum of 2 full-time semesters is required.
  • A minimum grade point average of 2.5 is required.
  • Degree must be completed within 4 years of admission.

In addition to the core requirements, students must complete 12 additional credits in one of six concentrations:

  • Sustainable Business and Economic Policy

  • International Development Economics

Graduate Research Degrees (MS, PhD)


The Charles H. Dyson School of Applied Economics and Management offers research-centered advanced degrees which often lead to academic careers and scientific discovery. Both the Master of Science (MS) and PhD program in Applied Economics and Management are administered by the Graduate School at Cornell.
