An introduction to Japanese performing arts, from the fourteenth-century genres of noh drama and kyōgen comedy up to “new theatre” shimpa in the early twentieth century. In addition to examining pivotal transitions in itinerant storytelling, dramatic texts, and dramaturgical treatises, we will also consider performance spaces, traditions of artistic transmission, and changing social contexts. All readings will be in English; no knowledge of the Japanese language required. Required attendance at a number of screenings to view recordings of modern performances and cinematic adaptations. (LL)
