This course will examine the changing contours of the African American past from the post-Reconstruction period to the present. W.E.B. Du Bois in The Souls of Black Folk evoked the need to study Black America fromthe inside out and in relation to the trajectory of American history. This course will seek to understand the challenges, triumphs and tragedies, of African Americans in the quest for racial equality in the United States It will consider, against the backdrop of the past, the extent to which the election of a Black President of the United States has signaled the end of Black history and the arrival of a post-racial America.
