BIOMI 3500 - Marine Biology(crosslisted) (also EAS 3555 ) Spring. 3 credits. Letter grades only.
Prerequisites: introductory biology for majors; BIOEE 1610 or permission of instructor.

The purpose of this course is to provide junior-level students with foundations in the biology of marine organisms from viruses to whales, their diversity, and their adaptations to the marine environment. The course will cover: Bacterial and viral biology and roles in the microbial loop; Microbe-Macrobe symbioses; Phytoplankton diversity, distribution and productivity, Zooplankton diversity and meroplankton (larvae); Invertebrate biology and diversity; Teleost form and function; Elasmobranch and megafaunal biology; Biogeochemistry; and Pathogens. This course will equip students with foundations for further courses in ecology and dynamics.
