CS 3220 - Introduction to Scientific Computation(crosslisted) (also ENGRD 3220 ) Spring. 3 credits.
Prerequisites: CS 1112 or CS 1132 and MATH 2220 , MATH 2230 , or MATH 2940 .
Staff.
Introduction to elementary numerical analysis and scientific computation. Topics include interpolation, quadrature, linear and nonlinear equation solving, least- quares fitting, and ordinary differential equations. The MATLAB computing environment is used. Vectorization, efficiency, reliability, and stability are stressed. Includes special lectures on computational statistics.
Outcome 1: Be knowledgeable and able to choose among the options for fitting datapoints, including polynomial interpolation, piecewise polynomial interpolation and splines.
Outcome 2: Know how to solve linear equations, and understand the circumstances under which the answer will be accurate or inaccurate.
Outcome 3: Know how to solve nonlinear equations, optimization problems and initial value problems, and understand the limitations of the popular methods for these problems.
