ECE 4300 - Lasers and Optoelectronics Fall. 4 credits.
Prerequisite: ECE 3030 or equivalent.
Staff.
Introduction to the operation and application of lasers. Cover diffraction-limited optics, Gaussian beams, optical resonators, interaction of radiation with matter, physics of laser operation, and laser design. Discusses applications of coherent radiation to nonlinear optics, communication, and research.
Outcome 1: Be able to analytically design and physically construct a functional laser with simple optics.
Outcome 2: Understand the operating principles of specific laser systems (e.g. tunable, ultrafast, high power, fiber and semiconductor lasers).
Outcome 3: Master basic techniques used in lasers, such as mode locking, Q-switching, harmonic generation.
Outcome 4: Be able to design a complete optical system using mirrors, lenses and gain media based on Gaussian beam analysis.
