ENTOM 4710 - Insect Development

Provides an in-depth treatment of the morphogenetic events of insect development and the genetic programs controlling them. Much of the course focuses on the development of the fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster, with particular emphasis on the establishment of the basic insect body plan, organogenesis, and metamorphosis.

Outcome 1: Learn the major morphogenetic events of insect development.


Outcome 2: Learn the major differences in developmental processes of insects in deifferent taxa.


Outcome 3: Learn the underlying cellular and genetic mechanisms of insect development.


Outcome 4: Understand the insect development in an evolutionary context.


Outcome 5: Learn how to access primary sources of information on insect development to acquire detailed knowledge of specific topics.
