Special Topic: Fall 2011 Synergies of Video and Audio
This is a studio course in which collaborating students across several disciplines will learn and apply principles of digital audio and video recording, camera techniques, sound design, audio mixing and video editing. They will explore and develop aesthetic and technical approaches to designing video and audio as integral and interactive digital elements, whether in abstract forms or narrative performance. Students will practice listening awareness: through location and studio audio recording and mixing specifically for film, video, slide shows, for DVD, web work, etc; and practice techniques such as looping (ADR), foley work, building sound effects, sampling and MIDI toward creating full soundscapes. Likewise they will experience visualization and looking: through techniques in cinematography, lighting, composition and color designing – in synergistic intersections with sound. They will create collaborative, experimental media pieces for spatial installations which may include projection, interactivity and performance, as well as for single-channel projection or display.
