SPAN 4420 - Thinking The Event: Theory, Politics, History(crosslisted) (also COML 4155 , FREN 4410 ) (LA-AS) Fall. 4 credits.
Conducted in English.
B. Bosteels.
This course studies how we can think about radical change produced by an event. Focusing on the philosophy of Alain Badiou, especially in Being and Event, we will also draw a larger picture of other theories of the event in contemporary theory and philosophy, including in the works of Jacques Derrida, León Rozitchner, José Revueltas, Grupo acontecimiento, “colectivo situaciones,” Michel Foucault, and Jean-François Lyotard. Readings will be limited to works translated into English, but a good reading knowledge of French is recommended.
