ENTOM 4830 - Insect Physiology


Spring. 4 credits.

Prerequisite: ENTOM 2120  or permission of instructor. Offered alternate years. Lec, lab.

Introduction to the often unique ways in which insects have met their basic needs. Examines each organ system with emphasis on basic principles and specific examples. Also introduces students to some common methods used in physiological research and to the critical reading of scientific literature.

Outcome 1: To be able to evaluate adaptations of a given organ system for a particular environmental pressure

Outcome 2: To be able to construct a graphical or verbal model of how a particular organ functions at the cellular level

Outcome 3: Be able to apply techniques in the lab and evaluate the results obtained

Outcome 4: To be able to design and carry out a (group) independent research project

Outcome 5: To be able to judge the conclusions of primary research articles
