What is the history of the body in performance in China, inside and outside the opera, and how far is the Asian body expressed or effaced in modern times? Does the Asian body on the stage and on the screen make a categorical difference in Western eyes? Is there a dynamic between cultures that is subtler than dialogue and that only the body can produce? This course is designed to realize the possibility of historical understanding through dance, theater, and film. (HTC)
