CHLIT 6620 - Tang Poetry: Themes and Contexts

Prerequisite: reading knowledge of classical and modern Chinese. Permission of instructor required. Co-meets with CAPS 4420/CHLIT 4420/MEDVL 4420.

Through guided readings in Chinese of selected poems of the Tang dynasty (618-907) on various themes and in different styles, students develop the essential analytical skills for reading Tang poetry while gaining an understanding of its social, cultural, and historical contexts. Students will also be introduced to essential bibliographical materials and critical literature for advanced study of Tang poetry. A final research paper on an approved topic is required. (LL)
