FSAD 3250 - Color and Surface Design of Textiles Spring. 3 credits. Letter grades only.
Recommended prerequisite: FSAD 1140 and FSAD 1350 . Minimum cost of materials: $100; lab fee: $250. Enrollment limited to: 18 students. Priority given to: FSAD apparel design majors.

Studio experience in the surface design of textiles combined with exercises in color theory. Textile projects use techniques such as block printing, shibori, batik, silk painting, silk screen, and stitchery to produce a portfolio of textile designs. Studio work is augmented by lectures on pattern and color theory illustrated by slides and textile examples.
Outcome 1: To develop a better understanding of the principles of color in design.
Outcome 2: To apply these principles to the surface design of textiles.
Outcome 3: To learn some of the basic techniques of textile surface design:
Silk screen
Tied and stitched resist dyeing (shibori)
Batik
Silk painting
Textile to digital surface design
Needlework techniques: embroidery, applique and trapunto
Outcome 4: To be able to produce a surface designed length of yardage sufficient for a garment
(4 yards).
Outcome 5: To develop portfolio presentations of surface design work.
