HADM 4410 - Strategic Management


     
Fall, Spring. 3 credits. Letter grades only.

Prerequisite: at least one course in accounting, finance, marketing, operations, economics, and information systems. Enrollment limited to: senior level status and juniors by permission. Required. Because students work in groups, absolute drop deadline is two weeks after first day of class.

Strategic management integrates all of student’s previous courses, including marketing, finance, accounting, operations, etc., and introduces them to new strategic management concepts. The course examines the total enterprise, the industry, and the competitive environment in which it operates. The goal is to develop a mastery of the analytical tools to perform analyses of the industry and competitors. The course focuses on how firms formulate, implement, and evaluate strategies. Using a case-based approach, the course emphasizes critical thinking and decision making to maintain competitive advantage in a hypercompetitive and maturing industry.

Outcome 1: PLO 1.1: Students will identify key issues and appropriately apply discipline principles to analyze a hospitality management solution.

Outcome 2: PLO 2.1: Students will create professional-quality written business documents.

Outcome 3: PLO 2.2: Students will plan and deliver a professional-quality oral presentation.

Outcome 4: PLO 2.3: Students will demonstrate productive team behaviors.

Outcome 5: PLO 3.1: Students will identify the ethical dimensions of a business decision.

Outcome 6: PLO 3.2: Students will evaluate the ethical consequences of their business decisions on various stakeholders.

Outcome 7: PLO 4.1: Students will describe their personal strengths and development needs related to hospitality management.

Outcome 8: PLO 4.2: Students will identify the personal goals and learning opportunities required for continued personal and professional development.
