ASIAN 2263 - Shakespeare in Cambodia (GB) (LA-AS) (EC-SEAP) Summer. 3 credits. Letter grades only.
G. Chigas.
This interdisciplinary course compares Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet with a verse novel from Cambodia, Tum Teav, which has many similarities with Shakespeare’s play. In each text the female protagonist is forced by her parents to marry someone against her will. As we analyze each text individually and comparatively, we suggest interpretations of the texts based on cultural systems and contexts that produce multiple possible meanings that can be ambiguous or in conflict with each other.
