BEE 2220 - Bioengineering Thermodynamics and Kinetics

Spring. 3 credits. Letter grades only.

Prerequisite: MATH 1920  and PHYS 2213 , and chemistry course completed or concurrent.

J. Hunter.

Living systems rely on chemical and phase equilibria, precise coordination of biochemical pathways, and the release of chemical energy as heat, all of which are governed by the laws of thermodynamics and the rates of chemical reactions. The course covers concepts and laws of thermodynamics as applied to phase transformations, work, heat, and chemical reactions; and reaction kinetics applied to industrial processes and living systems, all with a focus on biological examples.

Outcome 1: Students will improve their ability to identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, science and mathematics (ABET 1).

Outcome 2: Students will improve their ability to develop and conduct appropriate experimentation, analyze and interpret data, and use engineering judgement to draw conclusions (ABET 6).

Outcome 3: Students will demonstrate the ability to acquire and apply new knowledge as needed, using appropriate learning strategies (ABET 7).
