PADM 5380 - Translation of Research into Policy and Practice (crosslisted) HD 6580 Spring. 3 credits. Letter grades only.
Prerequisite or corequisite: CIPA students who did not pass the English Language Assessment offered by CIPA during orientation are required to take PADM 5051 , PADM 5053 , or PADM 5055 . Enrollment limited to: CIPA and graduate students. Enrollment preference given to: students in public health majors. This course is reading and writing-intensive.

This course will explore the principles and current state of the field known as translational research. In short, translational research is concerned with the application of research-based knowledge or evidence to the development and dissemination of programs, practices, and policies. This course is particularly focused on social and health-related programs and policies.
Outcome 1: Learn how to translate ideas effectively across disciplinary contexts.
Outcome 2: Learn concepts and methods to translate research knowledge into practice, programs, or policy.
Outcome 3: Learn to think critically about the research and policy literatures.
Outcome 4: Achieve quantitative literacy with regard to various methodologies related to research utilization and the evaluation and dissemination of programs.
Outcome 5: Learn writing and communication skills.
Outcome 6: Further develop interpersonal skills related to class participation and team projects.
Outcome 7: Develop increased sensitivity to issues related to the conduct of research in diverse community-based settings.
