In this course we will examine Braziliam literature and film from the mid-20th century to the present, taking into account the cultural, political, and social context of Brazil and the continent. We will analyze issues such as the importance of regional forces, the influence of gender and race, the representation of urban violence, and the local/global dialects. Authors and filmmakers may include João Guimarães Rosa, Clarice Lispector, Glauber Rocha, Eduardo Coutinho, Rubem Fonseca, and Ana Paula Maia.
