CHEM 7880 - Modern Methods in Structural Biology

Spring. 3 credits. Letter grades only.

Prerequisite: two semesters of college-level calculus (MATH 1110 and MATH 1120, 4 AP credits and MATH 1910, or equivalent courses taken elsewhere) and two semesters of college-level physics (PHYS 1101 and 1102, PHYS 2207 and 2208, PHYS 1112 and 2213, PHYS 1116 and 2217, or equivalent courses taken elsewhere). Permission of instructor required for undergraduates.

Course will cover: 1) the physics of scattering and image formation, 2) macromolecular crystallography, 3) small-angle X-ray scattering, and 4) cryo-electron microscopy. Students will learn the theoretical principles of structural biology and gain practical experience with modern methods in data processing, structure determination, refinement, validation, and interpretation.
