CHEM 7880 - Modern Methods in Structural Biology Spring. 3 credits. Letter grades only.
Prerequisite: two semesters of college-level calculus (MATH 1110 and MATH 1120 , 4 AP credits and MATH 1910 , or equivalent courses taken elsewhere) and two semesters of college-level physics (PHYS 1101 and 1102 , PHYS 2207 and 2208 , PHYS 1112 and 2213 , PHYS 1116 and 2217 , or equivalent courses taken elsewhere). Permission of instructor required for undergraduates.
N. Ando.
Course will cover: 1) the physics of scattering and image formation, 2) macromolecular crystallography, 3) small-angle X-ray scattering, and 4) cryo-electron microscopy. Students will learn the theoretical principles of structural biology and gain practical experience with modern methods in data processing, structure determination, refinement, validation, and interpretation.
