Recommended prerequisite: BIOEE 1780  or BIOEE 1781  and/or BIOEE 2740 .

Lectures cover the evolution, diversity, functional morphology, behavior, ecology, and biogeography of living mammals. Selective coverage of mammalian fossils, conservation status, domestication, and diseases.

Outcome 1: Understand the critical differences between mammals and other organisms in all aspects of their biology.

Outcome 2: Understand the evolutionary origins of mammals.

Outcome 3: Understand the evolutionary processes that led to the diversification of mammals.

Outcome 4: Understand the changing fashions in the classification of mammals.

Outcome 5: Classify mammals to the appropriate major group using correct scientific names, including extinct forms.

Outcome 6: Define the main biological characteristics of those groups.

Outcome 7: Understand how humans exploit certain species of mammal and how humans are themselves exploited by particular mammals. Appreciate how certain species of mammal need conservation following human activities.
