This course addresses jazz from two perspectives: the various sounds of jazz, as well as the historical streams-musical and cultural-that have contributed to its development. The historical focus of the course locates jazz both as a personal/interactive expression and as an expression of culture: how jazz affects and is affected by, notions of ethnicity, class, nationalism, art, gender, and genre. Throughout, we will focus our inquiry through listening to historical recordings. Listening and writing assignments are major components of the course.
