BIOG 3345 - Principles of Biochemistry: Structure and Function of Biomolecules

Prerequisite: BIOG 1101, BIOG 1102. Offered in Doha, Qatar at Weill Cornell Medical College. Successful completion of BIOG 3345 should indicate preparedness for BIOMG 3350 and future courses taught in the medical program.

This course provides an overview of the main aspects of biochemistry and relates molecular interactions to their effects on the organism as a whole, especially as related to human biology. The organization of macromolecules is addressed through a discussion of their hierarchical structure and a study of their assembly into complexes responsible for specific biological processes. The overall goal of this course is to impart basic knowledge of biomolecular structure and function and to familiarize students with fundamental biochemical concepts and techniques.

Outcome 1: Students will be able to describe basic cellular structure.

Outcome 2: Students will be able to describe the properties of water and how the aqueous environment influences the behavior of biological macromolecules.

Outcome 3: Students will be able to describe the structures of amino acids, their chemical properties and their organization into polypeptides and proteins.

Outcome 4: Students will be able to describe the methods for isolating and characterizing proteins.

Outcome 5: Students will be able to understand the basic elements of protein structure.

Outcome 6: Students will be able to outline the key principles of protein function.

Outcome 7: Students will be able to describe enzymes and how they catalyze reactions as well as enzyme kinetics.

Outcome 8: Students will be able to outline the structure of fundamental monosaccharides and polysaccharides.

Outcome 9: Students will be able to describe the structure and basic function of nucleotides.

Outcome 10: Students will be able to describe the structure of different classes of lipids and their roles in biological systems.
