HD 4390 - Positive Psychology in Prison

Prerequisite: HD 1150  or HD 1170  or PSYCH 1101 . Recommended Prerequisite:HD 2600 /PSYCH 2750  or PSYCH 2800 .

“Positive Psychology: Inside (Prison) and Out” is a course in collaboration with the Cornell Prison Education Program and Cayuga Correctional Facility. The course is intended to provide Cornell seniors the opportunity to gain insight into the issues facing incarcerated communities, while also giving incarcerated students access to an engaged education in positive psychology.

Outcome 1: Identify and explain more deeply their own assumptions about the criminal justice system.

Outcome 2: Analyze, interpret, and articulate major issues affecting incarcerated individuals.

Outcome 3: Develop the capacity for empathy by learning to relate to and appreciate people with lived experiences different from one’s own.

Outcome 4: Synthesize multiple perspectives among academic and community-engaged experiences to deepen understanding of positive psychology.

Outcome 5: Practice effective collaboration, teamwork, and communication skills.

Outcome 6: Demonstrate skills of critical reflection that include, writing, asking questions, observing, listening and engaging with one another in respectful discourse.
