Autonomous Mobile Robots Certificate

In eCornell Certificate Programs

With the rise of automation and AI, applications for robotics are coming to the forefront of nearly every industry, from fetching packages in warehouses to stocking shelves in stores.
This certificate program will equip you to bring together computer science and robotics to program autonomous mobile robots. By mathematically defining robots and the physical space around them, you’ll begin simulating how robots negotiate the problems of mapping (create a map of the obstacles around them) and localization (define their position in a map). You’ll then apply techniques, such as the Extended Kalman Filter and the Particle Filter, to localize a robot, while implementing, analyzing, and fine-tuning the performance of these localization approaches. You’ll also practice simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) to build a map while defining the robot’s position within the map at the same time. In order to move the robot, you will work with three approaches to motion planning: continuous, discrete, and sampling-based. Throughout your work in this certificate, you’ll write MATLAB programs and simulate the behaviors of robots in a variety of situations.
Whether you’re an engineer, computer scientist, or product developer, you’ll come away from the courses with greater exposure to today’s leading robotics programming approaches, enabling you to develop robots that can perform challenging tasks in complex environments.
This program requires you to have strong knowledge of programming, linear algebra, probability, geometry, and trigonometry.

Key Takeaways

  • Program a robot to move and see the world through its eyes
  • Have a robot figure out where it is with respect to a map (localization using Extended Kalman Filter and Particle Kalman Filter)
  • Map the environment and localize a robot simultaneously
  • Simulate driving a robot down a gradient
  • Simulate driving a robot on a roadmap
  • Simulate driving a robot using RRT (Rapidly exploring Random Tree)
