MAE 4640 - Orthopaedic Tissue Mechanics(crosslisted) (also BME 4640 ) Spring. 3 credits.
Prerequisites: ENGRD 2020 , MAE 2120 , MAE 3250 , or permission of instructor. Co-meets with MAE 5640 . Fulfills Senior Design requirement if M.E. seniors enroll in corresponding section of MAE 4291 .
Staff.
Application of mechanics and materials principles to orthopaedic tissues. Physiology of bone, cartilage, ligament, and tendon and the relationship of these properties to their mechanical function. Mechanical behavior of skeletal tissues. Functional adaptation of these tissues to their mechanical environment. Tissue engineering of replacement structures.
Outcome 1: Students will know and understand the function and physiology of bone, cartilage, tendon and ligament as organs and tissue.
Outcome 2: Apply strength of materials concepts to the mechanical behavior of musculoskeletal tissues and organs.
Outcome 3: Understand the unique adaptive capacity of musculoskeletal tissues to their mechanical environment.
Outcome 4: Integrate and interpret biological data and mechanical engineering concepts.
