AEM 4371 - Case Studies on Innovation Spring (weeks 1-7). 1.5 credits. Letter grades only (no audit).
Prerequisite: AEM 2200 , AEM 2600 , AEM 2601 or equivalents. Co-meets with AEM 6371 .

This course explores firm strategies related to innovation and technological change through independent case research. We focus on how the commercial success of technological innovations—new products, processes, and services—depends on the firm’s business model. Other key topics include intellectual property rights and the management of technological uncertainty through organizational arrangements such as corporate venturing, spinoffs, crowdsourcing and alliances.
Outcome 1: Effectively utilize qualitative research methods
Outcome 2: Demonstrate an understanding of management under high uncertainty
Outcome 3: Improve their oral and written expression through intense class discussion and writing assignments
Outcome 4: Perform independent research and analysis to build critical thinking skills
Outcome 5: Explain the challenges of managerial decision making and leadership in dynamic contexts
Outcome 6: Examine technology-based industries.
