This seminar examines the emergence of national identities, nationalist movements, and nation-states in the modern Arab world. First, we will examine various approaches to the question of nationalism, using Benedict Anderson’s Imagined Communities as our basic reference. We will then test the applicability of these general theories to the Arab World through our examination of specific case studies. (RS)
