MAE 4640 - [Orthopaedic Tissue Mechanics]

(crosslisted) BME 4640

Spring. Not offered: 2021-2022. Next offered: 2022-2023. 3 credits. Letter grades only.

Prerequisite: ENGRD 2020  and MAE 3270 , or permission of instructor. Satisfies senior design requirement if enrolled in MAE 4641 . Co-meets with MAE 4641 /MAE 5640 .

Staff.

Application of mechanics and materials principles to orthopaedic tissues. Physiology of bone, cartilage, ligament, and tendon and the relationship of these properties to their mechanical function. Mechanical behavior of skeletal tissues. Functional adaptation of these tissues to their mechanical environment. Tissue engineering of replacement structures.

Outcome 1: Students will be able to know and understand the function and physiology of bone, cartilage, tendon and ligament as organs and tissue.

Outcome 2: Students will be able to apply strength of materials concepts to the mechanical behavior of musculoskeletal tissues and organs.

Outcome 3: Students will be able to understand the unique adaptive capacity of musculoskeletal tissues to their mechanical environment.

Outcome 4: Students will be able to integrate and interpret biological data and mechanical engineering concepts.
