There is now widespread recognition that the world’s megacities have become increasingly economically, politically, and culturally powerful in recent decades. People are flocking to cities, and work itself has become largely an urban phenomenon. In many places around the world, processes occurring at the level of the city – in some regards even more so than the nation state – crucially shape the experience of work. This course is fundamentally concerned with assessing the ways in which the political, economic, and spatial organization of cities affects work. We will draw on examples from around the world, including both Global North and South, while analyzing how global flows of capital, commodities, and workers interact within the contemporary city.
