COMM 3350 - Presenting Information Visually

Spring. 3 credits. Student option grading (no audit).

D. Bailey.

As communication professionals, we often present information orally and via written words. Spoken and written words alone, however, are frequently not enough to convey the information that we need to deliver. Visual objects can help us in such cases. In this course you will learn to master the basics of clean layout and design of visual objects such as tables, graphs, dashboards, slide decks, and professional reports. We will build your practical skills in presenting information visually based on fundamental theories in areas such as cognitive psychology and communication that explain how people perceive and construe sensory input. No incoming software skills are required, but I expect you to be willing to explore and learn on your own or with peers beyond classroom instruction.

Outcome 1: Identify the basics of clean layout and design, and apply your new skills in creating effective information objects

Outcome 2: Demonstrate theoretical knowledge from fields such as communication and cognitive psychology in your design of information objects, thereby aiding perception by helping the senses and brain work together

Outcome 3: Create tables and graphs that fit and showcase the data

Outcome 4: Design an information dashboard to display key metrics to decision-makers

Outcome 5: Prepare slide decks that illustrate your words, support your points, and transform your talk

Outcome 6: Prepare slide decks that illustrate your words, support your points, and transform your talk

Outcome 7: Plan and deliver talks with visual aids that help people to understand and retain your message

Outcome 8: Navigate, explore, and use various graphical design and presentation software packages
