Degree Programs

In the College of Engineering .

Degrees Offered

Cornell programs in engineering and applied science lead to the degrees of bachelor of science (B.S.), master of engineering (M.Eng.), master of science (M.S.), and doctor of philosophy (Ph.D.).

General academic information concerning the B.S. degree is given under “Undergraduate Study ”. A student can pursue a degree in one of 14 majors. The majors are listed under “Engineering Majors ”.

In addition, students in engineering and across the university can pursue one of more Engineering minors. These are discussed in “Minor Degree Programs ”.

Many students stay a fifth year in the College of Engineering to pursue a professional degree, the master of engineering (M.Eng.) degree. Joint enrollment in the B.S. and M.Eng. degrees is possible for students in their last semester who lack only 1 to 8 credits for the B.S.  For full details on M.Eng. degrees, see “M.Eng. Degree Programs ”.

Programs leading to the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees are administered by the Graduate School. They are described in the Announcement of the Graduate School and the special announcement Graduate Study in Engineering and Applied Science.

Majors (B.S.)

Undergraduate students in engineering spend most of their first two years in the Common Curriculum, which is administered by the College Curriculum Governing Board (CCGB). By the end of their fourth semester, students will affiliate with one of the majors given below. The majors BE, ChemE, CE, ECE, EnvEng, MSE, and ME are accredited by ABET.

Undergraduate Minors

Undergraduate students may pursue minors in a wide variety of areas offered by multiple colleges in the University. Completed minors will appear on the student’s transcript. Not all departments offer minors and some may include specific limitations based on a student’s major. Consult the list below or contact the appropriate department for information on a specific minor and how to pursue the minor.

Minors offered by the College of Engineering are listed below and all require a minimum of six courses and 18 credits. For more information on these minors, see Engineering Minors .

  • Aerospace Engineering
  • Applied Mathematics
  • Biological Engineering
  • Biomedical Engineering
  • Civil Infrastructure
  • Computer Science
  • Dyson Business Minor for Engineers
  • Earth and Atmospheric Sciences
  • Electrical and Computer Engineering
  • Engineering Management
  • Environmental Engineering
  • Game Design

Master of Engineering Programs (M.Eng.)

M.Eng. degrees are awarded in most of the major engineering areas including aerospace engineering, biomedical engineering, electrical engineering, engineering mechanics, nuclear engineering, operations research and information engineering, and systems engineering. The following 30-credit professional master of engineering (M.Eng.) degrees are offered.

Double Major in Engineering

The double-major option, which makes it possible to develop expertise in two allied engineering majors, generally requires at least one semester beyond the usual four years. Students affiliate with one major following normal procedures and then petition to enter a second major before the end of their junior year. All requirements of both majors must be satisfied. Further information is available from Engineering Advising, 180 Rhodes Hall, and the individual major offices.
